Before Surgery

A member of the surgical center staff will call you a few days prior to your general/plastic surgery or the day before your pain procedure to obtain health and registration information and answer any questions you may have.

If you are undergoing general anesthesia, do not eat or drink anything after midnight for cosmetic or general surgery and 6 hours before your pain procedure. This includes gum, mints, smoking on the day of your surgery as well. This will help reduce the chance of aspiration and decrease the risk of nausea or vomiting following anesthesia.

Avoid the use of mints, chewing gum, or cigarettes on the day of your procedure/surgery. Failure to strictly adhere to these instructions may result in cancellation or delay of your surgery.

If you are undergoing monitored anesthesia or sedation for pain procedures, do not eat or drink anything 6 hours prior to your procedure. You may drink clear liquids (water, apple juice or black coffee without cream or milk) up to 6 hours prior to your arrival at the center.

Unless instructed by your physician, do not take any medication after midnight the day of your surgery. Please note: If you are on blood pressure or heart medication, if you are Diabetic, or on any blood thinning medications, obtain specific instructions from your physician. If you take pain medication on a consistent basis, you may take your pain medication with a small sip of water (enough to get medication down) and if tolerated on an empty stomach. The center's pre-operative nurse will provide you with instructions regarding your current medications as well.
